FFMDigitalmemoirs have been self-hosting for a year now. It may start with stressful beginning but I believe that things keep getting better. Opening the dashboard is no longer intimidating. Honestly, I truly love and enjoy self-hosting as I have full control of my own blog (read: my baby). Since I have announced that I went self-hosting last year, there are actually few people asking me about it. Of course, the first thing they asked is “Is it easy to self-hosting?”. My answer will vary and usually it will be “it’s depend“.
Why I choose to use self-hosted blog platform?
Personally, it was one of my major blogging goal to have a self-hosted blog. To choose to blog under self-host platform is a matter of personal preferences. Since I’ve always want to give it a try and bring my blogging game to another level, I chose to go for self-host platform. Plus, I truly want to have a full control of my own website.
Is it easy to manage self-hosted blog?
Well, define easy? Nothing is easy unless you have personal experiences creating website and understand all the coding, CSS etc. I do not have such skills. Not forget to mentioned that I almost fail Programming C++ during my bachelor degree. Plus, my IT graduate little brother also could not even help me back then. Hence, it was quite difficult for me at first. For the first 2 months, I was struggling hard. I even thought to create a new blog under my old trusted Blogspot platform. I have to take initiative to learn from others bloggers and yes, Google. Thanks God for NetKL demo and Erin Azmir’s blog tutorial. They have helped me a lot. So, if you want to move to self-host platform, I suggest you to do some research first. At least with some knowledge, you won’t feel discourage when you come across obstacles.
How expensive is self-hosting? Budget-wise advice?
Self-hosting is costly compare to the free blogging platform. You have to pay for almost everything. Starting from your own domain and hosting which cost varies depend on which company you choose. NetKL (Malaysia based company) offered as low as RM60 (Hosting + Domain) for beginner. Some like wordpress.org even offer domain and hosting in monthly fee. Feel free to google everything up so that you are aware of choices you can go for. I started with the cheapest package and slowly upgrading. Below is my rough estimation for my own blog:
- NetKL Hosting – RM60
- Etsy WordPress Theme – Approx RM70 (Alexandra Theme by MaiLoveParis)
= RM 130
As for budgeting, I would suggest you to check out a free theme in case you did not want to forge some cash to purchase expensive theme. I’m a sucker for cute theme. Because of that, I have spent more than RM400 on WordPress theme alone in a year duration. *cries*
Why should you choose to go with self-hosting blog platform?
I love self-hosting because I have full control of my own blog. Too much that I keep saying the same thing, again and again. I can choose my own theme and also the advertisement that I wish to promote. Self-hosted blog will attract more advertising company than the free platform. This is very good especially if you would love to monetized your website. Since I’ve decided to take blogging seriously as my part time job, choosing a self-hosted platform did helped me a lot to make some profits. Well enough to cover my annual fees and
buy more theme save for a wedding.
My experiences with self-hosting platform.
So far, everything is great. I just need to do regular blog back up and also some plugins plus media cleaning. My suggestion is to perform fortnightly backup especially if you updated your blog regularly. Sure, there are time where I was frustrated with some coding that I won’t be able to fix using plugins but all in all, it’s still manageable. Judging from how much I’m loving my self-hosted blog, I do not think that I will be back to free platform anytime soon.
